Novi Track came up big on Thursday, winning both meets against the Bobcats from Grand Blanc. The Boys put themselves in the driver’s seat for the Division Championship by beating the only other undefeated team in the division, 82-55. The Girls won 13 of 17 events and the meet 95-33.
The Boys’ meet featured two of the state’s top teams and was destined to be a donnybrook. Novi came out swinging with Gabe Mudel, Miles Brown, Blake Maday, and Nate Wood in the first event on the track. The four Wildcats were magnificent, devastating the Bobcats formidable #1 ranked 4 x 800 team to win going away. Brian You and Alvin Li followed the win with a 2-3 showing in the High Hurdles to largely neutralize Grand Blanc’s top hurdler. Next came a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Meters from Sean Pitcher (Personal Record 10.99), Nisarg Dharia, and Leon Chen. Then Long Jumpers Blair Mayes (PR 20′ 8″), Brendan Ireland, and Vincent Ma posted their own sweep of the Bobcats, and Grand Blanc was reeling. When all three sprinters came back for the very next event and combined with Aaron Baird for an epic battle in the 4 x 200 Meter Relay, Novi beat the #1 ranked Bobcat relay by two hundredths of a second and took control of the meet and the Division.
Novi held on to the lead with wins in the 1600 Meters (Maday) and 4×100 (Chen, Brian You, Dharia, Pitcher), and scored important points by placing 2nd in the 400 (Mayes, PR 53.09), 300 Hurdles (Ireland), and Discus (Jordon Castleberry), and 3rd in the 1600 (Trey Mullins, PR 4:41) and 300 Hurdles(You). With sixteen points-to-go to secure the win, Pole Vaulters Josh Brucker and Nate Lyon grabbed 7 points with a win and a tie for second in their event. In the 800 Meters, Nate Wood dipped under 2 minutes to win and Matt Gustitus lowered his own Freshman Record to 2:01.44, placing 2nd and leaving only one point to clinch. Novi went on to sweep the 200 (Dharia, Chen, Baird) and then win the 3200 (Mudel) for good measure.
The Girls dominated the Field and Hurdle events, sweeping six of the seven contests and giving up only a 2nd place in Long Jump to the Bobcats. They also swept the 100 Meters and won the 200, 400, 800, 3200, 4 x 100, and 4 x 800. Starring for Novi were ten (likely eleven) different individual event winners: Neha Surapaneni(100), Alice Wou (200), Amora Wilson (400), Katherine Ray (800), Amanda Putti (3200), Ally Pringle (High Hurdles), Elly Riddering (300 Hurdles), Cecile Steck (Shot Put and Discus), Hannah Hood-Blaxill (High Jump), and Lizzie Babcock (Long Jump). Pole Vault results were not available at the time of publication.
The Wildcats will compete at the 48th annual Ashley/Brennan Relays at Waterford Mott HS this Saturday.
