The Novi Boys Track team handled Hartland on Tuesday to keep their perfect dual meet record intact, winning 14 of 17 events and the meet 97-40. The Girls team lost 47-89. Weather conditions were mediocre: temperatures in the mid-50s and an endless light rain.
Starring for the Boys were double-winners Blair Mayes (Long Jump and 400 Meters), Jordon Castleberry (Shot Put and Discus Throw), Brendan Ireland (300 Hurdles and 4 x 200), Leon Chen (4 x 100 and 4 x 200), and Sean Pitcher (4 x 100 and 4 x 200).
Matt Gustitus, who had some trepidation in trying a new event, surprised everyone and set Novi’s Freshman record in the 800 Meters with a time of 2:03.0, following the lead of winner Gabe Mudel. The old record was 2:03.8 , set by Zach Masserant in 2009. Miles Brown nipped Nate Wood to win the 200 Meters, and Isaiah Washington finished 3rd to complete the Wildcat sweep in the event. Freshmen Gustitus, Washington and Brown combined with fellow freshman Matthew Pacas-McCarthy to take down a 31-yr-old record in the 4 x 400 Meter Relay. Brown anchored the relay with a scintillating 50.4 split, coming from way behind to beat Hartland’s varsity team and win the event. The Wildcats ran 3:40.6, surpassing the former Freshman mark of 3:40.8 set in 1987 by Jeff Morrison, Chad Guyot, Matt “Crash” Koneda, and Lee McMains.
Alvin Li won the High Hurdles, just out-dueling teammate Brian You, who placed 2nd in both hurdle races. Blake Maday and Wood went 1-2 in the 1600, both running under 4:40. Josh Brucker won the Pole Vault, matching his season best 10 feet 6 inches. Matt Whyte, Dallas Foley, Zach Dembinski, and Maday started the meet with a convincing win in the 4 x 800 Meter Relay. Sam Uribe (4 x 100), Devin Zhang(4 x 200), and You (4 x 100) were also part of Novi’s Relay sweep.
For the Girls Team, Allie Nagle (200 Meters), Amora Wilson (400 Meters), Katherine Ray (1600 Meters), and the 4 x 100 team of Pranati Kongara, Casyana Cervalin, Ally Buchman, and Amiyah Wilson were winners on the track. Freshman Lizzie Babcock won the Long Jump and is still undefeated in dual meets in the event.
