Boys Varsity Track, Girls Varsity Track · County Runners Up! Novi Track and Field’s Amazing Season Gets Even Better

2016 – May 27

The Novi High Track Team finished 15th in the Girls Division and 2nd in the Boys Division out of the fifty-two schools that were represented at the 57th annual Oakland County Championships, held this year at Waterford Mott. The illustrious meet has seen some of the best performances in the country over the years and enshrines every victor in its annual commemoratory program, dating back to the meet’s inception in 1960. Despite hot and muggy conditions, 2016’s “O-Co” meet showcased some of the best races in it’s storied history.

Joost Plaetinck and Scott Sawyer became the latest Wildcat O-Co Enshrinees, each winning their best event- Plaetinck’s 3200 Meters and Sawyer’s High Jump. Sawyer jumped six feet four inches to top the County’s best efforts on the day, and also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault.

Plaetinck was in top form, controlling the race from the start and forcing the lead pack to respond to his transient inclinations. The challengers fell away one by one under the withering stratagem, and after seven rounds only an upstart and a close rival remained with him . When the bell rung, the Senior revealed his remaining card: the Ace of Trumps. Plaetinck dusted them with a sixty-two second final lap and won with conviction. He finished in a Fully-Automatic-Timed 9:15.01, faster than anyone in the history of the meet, save last year’s meet record by Mott’s Ryan Robinson and National Champion Brian Grosso’s two wins in 1988 and 1989. Plaetinck also moved up to 2nd on Novi’s all-time list, passing Chris Toloff’s 9:15.30a.

Junior Scott Macpherson ran the best race of his career thus far and finished 3rd in the 1600 Meters, setting a Personal Record FAT 4:21.96.  John Landy (4:28.28a, 10th) and Adam Ditri (4:31.12a, 12th) weren’t far behind, with Landy landing an eleven second plus PR.

Nate Wood’s 800 Meter effort was the fastest by a Sophomore in Novi’s history. Wood ran a FAT 1:58.75, finishing 10th overall despite racing in the “slow” first heat.

Multi-talented Junior Emma Hammelef was named All-County in three events: the Pole Vault, the Shot Put, and the Discus Throw. Hammelef set a PR of 111 feet with the Disc.

Nineteen Wildcats in total were named All-County, a moniker afforded only the best eight finishers in each event. Those not mentioned above below:

Anthony D’Annibale- 400 Meters, 3rd

Nathan Hankerson- 100 Meters, 4th, PR
